I've Been on Wegovy for 6 Months—Here's How It's Going
My latest Wegovy update includes health insurance annoyances, a brief recap of The Substance, and a new plan moving forward!
Hello friends! I posted my last Wegovy update in January, and now that it’s officially been six months since I started taking it, I figured it was time for an update.
Sooooooooooooooo how has it been going?
Since we last spoke 10 weeks ago, I’ve lost 12 pounds, so it’s been going—it’s just slowed down. And no, AI didn’t write that. I just enjoy em dashes so to anyone who suspected that, in the words of the late Logan Roy, fuck off!! Lol.
I started taking Wegovy on September 23rd, one month after giving birth. Since then, I’ve lost a grand total of 46.4 pounds. This is great, but I did gain 65 pounds while pregnant, so it’s better than it sounds. I had already lost 13 pounds when I started taking Wegovy so I’m ALMOST back at the starting point. However, the weight loss did start to slow down, which you can see in the photo montage above (okay, I realize you CAN’T really see because of the baggy clothes, so I’ll try to get better photos next time. I did link the clothes below though!!).
Part of the slow down is because I’ve been taking the shots every 10-11 days instead of every seven days (I explain why below). I also never increased the dosage because of all the stomach issues I was having and because the lower dose was working! That said, I’ve only been losing maybe one pound per week, and recently, I haven’t lost any weight all.
Regardless, I know being down 46.4 pounds is great! I’m currently five pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight and 15-20 pounds away from my average pre-kids/IVF weight. What’s insane is that I always thought my weight was too high when I was 15-20 pounds less from what I am right now!!! So will I be satisfied when (or if?!) I reach my goal weight? That is TBD.
Let’s dive into the specifics.
How Are My Stomach Issues?
My last update included details on my constant cycle of constipation followed by the opposite-of-constipation followed by constipation and so on. This is somehow still continuing, but it’s not as bad.
I believe it’s gotten better because I’ve been on the medication for a while, and also because I take Metamucil and Miralax daily like a real elder lady. If I skip these things, I will stop going to the bathroom for a few days, and then eventually I’ll start inflating like an already blown up balloon that’s ready to pop. Then it will get so bad that my acid reflux will try to swallow me like a tsunami in a small beach town (yes I said tsunami!!! Piper no!!!!!). Then after I finally go to the bathroom, it will get better.
As you can imagine, the Wegovy roller coaster has been messing with my social life. I’ve turned down plans, canceled plans, and left plans early because of the stomach issues. This past weekend, my husband and I finally had a day out with friends (and without kids!!) in Boston, and I got sick after eating brunch and having a single glass of sangria. I should have known it was coming because I hadn’t gone to the bathroom in over a week, but alas, I had to stop drinking and go home. This was fine because I had to go home to retrieve my kids anyway, but I was still mad.
I honestly feel very much like Demi Moore in The Substance. If you’re not familiar with the movie, Demi Moore’s character is upset that she’s getting old, which like same, and is offered a drug that will create a youthful, more beautiful version of herself. The catch is that she has to switch off between this youthful version of herself and the “old” her every other week. MIND YOU, youthful her (AKA Margaret Qualley) LITERALLY COMES OUT OF HER BACK. I was not prepared for that to happen and honestly have not recovered even though I watched this movie two weeks ago. Anyway, the substance wreaks havoc on Demi Moore, and she ends up getting so distraught that she wants to stop taking the meds, but then she keeps taking them. Because youth.
I covered my eyes while watching 95% of that movie, but I KEPT WATCHING even though I was so disgusted by it… just like Demi Moore kept taking “the substance” even though it was literally killing her… JUST LIKE I keep taking Wegovy even though it sometimes makes me feel like shit.
On a serious note, the side effects really aren’t as bad anymore. And also, something else could be causing my stomach problems. For example, I decided I didn’t have a gluten sensitivity anymore when I was pregnant. Maybe I still do lol.
Why I’ve Been Spacing Out Shots
If you haven’t heard, health insurance kind of sucks!!!
After losing my job in December, we went on my husband’s health insurance starting in January. For reference, Wegovy comes in a box of four pens—one for each week. I got a box in December for the month of January, so that was good, but when it came time to get a new box for February, my new insurance said no.
Our new insurance plan information listed Wegovy as covered for weight loss with prior authorization, but after submitting a prior authorization numerous times, they kept closing it and saying that I didn’t need a prior authorization because it’s not covered at all. After calling a million times and getting conflicting information, it was concluded that Wegovy was not covered at all, even with prior authorization, even though it says it is online. Make it make sense.
SO, I ended up getting a discount through the official Wegovy website for a box of four pens.
To make all the pens I had left last as long as possible, I started taking them every 10-11 days instead of every seven days. At first, I was still losing a pound a week, but I haven’t lost any weight in the past two and a half weeks.
The pens I have are also the 1mg dose. After 1mg, you’re supposed to go up to 1.7mg and then 2.4mg. Staying on 1mg could be the reason why I stopped losing weight, but honestly, I probably just need to be healthier. Side note: Staying at a lower dose is what some people call “microdosing,” which is apparently a trend lol.
So What’s Next?
If you thought my GLP-1 journey was ending now that I’ve finished all of my Wegovy pens, you thought wrong.
Next up is Zepbound!!!
My doctor prescribed me this GLP-1 after I told her I couldn’t afford Wegovy without insurance (even though I thought about paying for it anyway LOLLL). I was able to get it directly from the manufacturer for a discounted price, which ended up being half the price of my Wegovy box!
Zepbound is supposed to work better, but I don’t trust any “supposed to’s” when it comes to GLP-1s because everyone has a different experience with them. I’m starting at the lowest dose, so we’ll see what happens after being on higher doses of Wegovy for the last six months. I’m hopeful, but I also know we could be plateauing.
I used my last Wegovy pen today, so I’ll take my first Zepbound shot at some point next weekend. Until then, I’ll be sipping on some sweet, sweet Miralax. In the meantime, if you have any questions you’d like me to answer about my experience with GLP-1s in my next update, put them in the comments (or message me!).
XOXO,
Sam

Hello! I just read your update. I have been on Mounjaro (Zepbound in the UK) and have written a bit about it if you want to have a look on my substack. In short, it’s great but you need to drink loads of water and up your fibre intake. Prunes are your friend! But you know the drill by now with GLP-1s. Good luck! X
Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm on Mounjaro and writing about it as well, I'm paying for mine as well and it's interesting to see how it compares.
